| St. Thomas the Apostle School uses a system
called
DWP or
Discipline with
Purpose to build a positive and caring school atmosphere. |
3 Rules
With DWP, there are only 3 basic rules for children to remember:
- Respect
- Contribute
- Follow Procedures
Note: Each teacher designs his/her own set of classroom procedures
while some procedures (common area) are school-wide. |
15 Skills for Self Discipline
DWP stresses the teaching of
15 Skills for Self-Discipline.
These skills are taught in various ways including classroom lessons and
all-school assemblies. If a child is caught in a situation where he/she
is not using DWP skills, that child may be given a card. Cards vary in
color depending on grade level, where the card was given, and the number
of disciplinary occurrences. If given a card, the child will have to
mark which of the 15 skills he/she was not using at the time of the
incident. If not given by the homeroom teacher, the homeroom teacher
will be informed of any cards given, and in some cases, cards are sent
home to be signed by parents or guardians. |
The Big Three
The
Big Three are
behaviors identified by DWP as dangerous and unacceptable. These are
behaviors that result in physical or emotional harm to others. Children who
behave in a way that falls under this category will be sent immediately
to the principal's office and may face suspension or expulsion. |
